What is the Market Facilitation Index?

Definition

The Market Facilitation Index (MFI) is a technical indicator developed by Bill Williams that measures the efficiency of price movement by analyzing the relationship between price change and volume. It shows how much price moved per unit of volume.

Purpose

MFI helps traders identify market states and potential turning points by revealing whether the market is facilitated (efficient) or struggling (inefficient) in its price movements relative to trading volume.

Key Insight

Unlike traditional volume indicators, MFI focuses on the efficiency of price movement rather than just volume magnitude, making it particularly useful for identifying market momentum and potential reversals.

How is MFI Calculated?

The Formula

MFI = (High - Low) / Volume

Where Volume is measured in thousands or millions

H

High

Highest price of the period

L

Low

Lowest price of the period

V

Volume

Trading volume for the period

Calculation Example

Given: High = $105.50, Low = $104.20, Volume = 250,000 shares

Calculation: MFI = ($105.50 - $104.20) / 250 = $1.30 / 250 = 0.0052

Interpretation: Each 1,000 shares traded moved the price by $0.0052

MFI Color-Coded Interpretation

Bill Williams' system uses four distinct colors to represent different market conditions

Green Bars

↑ MFI Rising + ↑ Volume Increasing

Market State: Strong trending market with institutional support

Meaning: The market is moving efficiently with increasing participation

Action: Trend continuation likely - stay with the trend

Brown Bars

↓ MFI Falling + ↓ Volume Decreasing

Market State: Trend losing momentum and participation

Meaning: Both efficiency and interest are declining

Action: Prepare for potential trend reversal or consolidation

Blue Bars

↑ MFI Rising + ↓ Volume Decreasing

Market State: Price moving efficiently but without crowd participation

Meaning: Strong hands (institutions) are active, weak hands absent

Action: Watch for potential breakout when volume returns

Pink Bars

↓ MFI Falling + ↑ Volume Increasing

Market State: High activity but inefficient price movement

Meaning: Market struggle - lots of trading but little progress

Action: Exercise extreme caution - potential reversal zone

MFI Trading Strategies

1

Green Bar Trend Following

Setup Rules

  • ✓ Look for consecutive green bars
  • ✓ Confirm trend direction with price action
  • ✓ Enter on pullbacks during green sequences
  • ✓ Exit when brown or pink bars appear

Risk Management

Stop Loss: Below recent swing low/high

Take Profit: 2:1 or 3:1 risk-reward ratio

Position Size: 1-2% of account per trade

2

Pink Bar Reversal Strategy

Entry Conditions

  • ✓ Multiple pink bars at key support/resistance
  • ✓ Confirm with other reversal indicators (e.g., divergence on RSI)
  • ✓ Look for candlestick reversal patterns
  • ✓ Enter after a clear reversal candle forms

Exit Conditions

Stop Loss: Just beyond the reversal candle/level

Take Profit: At next significant support/resistance

Management: Trailing stop or partial profits

3

Blue Bar Breakout Confirmation

Setup Rules

  • ✓ Identify consolidation or range-bound market
  • ✓ Look for blue MFI bars during the consolidation
  • ✓ Wait for a clear price breakout from the range
  • ✓ Enter on the first green bar after the breakout

Considerations

False Breakouts: Blue bars can precede false breakouts if volume doesn't follow.

Confirmation: Always wait for a strong green bar to confirm institutional entry.

Volatility: Breakouts can be volatile; manage risk tightly.

MFI Trading Examples (Simulated)

Visualizing MFI signals in action

Example 1: Strong Uptrend (Green Bars)

In this example, a series of green MFI bars confirms a strong uptrend. Price continues to move efficiently higher with increasing volume, indicating solid bullish momentum.

Example 2: Bearish Reversal (Pink Bars)

Here, pink MFI bars appear at a resistance level. Despite rising volume, price struggles to make new highs, signaling a potential reversal as the market becomes inefficient.
